Gene was born June 18, 1960, to Eugene Townson and Ida Mae (McKay) Melton in Childress, Texas. He was united in marriage to Jamye Christian on May 14, 2016, in Runaway Bay, Texas. Gene was the Vice President of Operations for New Tex Trucking and a member of the First Baptist Church in Bridgeport. Gene loved to tease people he loved, play golf and fish, and he cherished his time with his family and especially enjoyed being Big Pop to his six granddaughters. Gene was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, supervisor, and incredible friend to many. His passing leaves a void that will not easily be filled.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Townson Melton, Sr.; and his sister, Georgeanne Wells.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Jamye Melton of Decatur; his daughter, Ashley Smalley and husband Dustin of Bridgeport, his son, Matt Melton of Runaway Bay; his son, Cody Christian and wife Julie of Decatur; and his daughter, Carley Jones and husband Jason of Decatur; his grandchildren, Aubrey, Linzi, Riley, Reese, Macey and Kenley; his mother, Ida Kell of Electra; his brothers, Rodney Melton and wife Stephanie and Dewayne Kell and wife Patsy, both of Electra; his sister, Sara Carter and husband John of Merkel; numerous extended family members and a host of ornery, yet loveable, friends.
Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the First Baptist Church Youth and Children's Camp Fund.
