Betty Lee Buckner, 81, a retired nurse went to be with our Lord Saturday, June 5, 2010 in Bowie, Texas. Funeral: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport. Burial in Sunset Cemetery. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Reverend Ron Abbott to officiate. Pallbearer: Billy, Jason and Mark Mattix, James and Jerry McClendon, Joe Wadsworth, Jason Starr.
Betty was born September 24, 1928 to Pete and Jewell (Howry) Smith in Knox City. They died when Betty was a child. Pearl and Era Beauty took her in when she was 8 and raised her as their own. She went to school at Park Springs and attended Decatur Baptist College. She worked as a nurse at Rogers Hospital in Decatur, Bridgeport Hospital and Bowie Nursing Center.
She was preceded in death by 3 husbands, Sam Mattix, Robert "Red" Williams and Marshall Buckner; her son, Terry Mattix; her brother, James Smith and her sister, Ruby Lou Lane.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Buz Mattix and his wife Gayla of Sunset; her daughter, Valera Hudson of Bowie; 6 grandchildren, Judson Mattix and wife Renae, Mark Mattix and wife Elana, Eric Nowell and Billy Mattix, all of Sunset, Jennifer Myers and Lucas Starr, both of Ft. Worth; great grandchildren, Brittanie, Lexie, Kathryn and Adam Mattix, Alex and Haley Kaiser, Conner and Sally Meyers; 2 sisters, Louise Berresheim of Kentucky, Ola Mae Lancaster of Mt. Grove, MO; daughter in law, Jeri Mattix; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
