Decatur~ Catherine Faye McAmis Russell, 93, went to be with our Lord Friday, January 20, 2017 in Kilgore at the home of her daughter and son-in-law where she lived for the past seven years.
Funeral is 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Decatur Church of Christ with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mike McDowell will officiate. Pallbearers include Russ Fothergill, Rob Fothergill, Gary Murph, Kenneth Murph, David McAmis, and Doug Pierce. Honorary pallbearers are Garland Lipsey, Gordon Ploeger, Wes Simmons, Alan Sessions, and David Pierce.
Catherine was born on January 22, 1923 to James and Della (Hufstedler) McAmis in Tolar, Texas. Her mother died when she was three, and her father worked on the railroad while his sister cared for Catherine, her brother and sister, and five cousins. After her father’s death when she was 13 Catherine, her brother and younger sister lived on their own in Lamesa, Texas. She was united in marriage to H.C. Russell on September 14, 1940 in Lamesa, Texas. They operated cotton and cattle farms near Lamesa and Brownfield, Texas until 1955. When her daughter started school, she worked in the school cafeteria in Welch, Texas. After moving to Decatur in 1955, Catherine worked at Russell’s Department Store and Renshaw Drug. She was a member of the Decatur Church of Christ for more than 60 years. Catherine volunteered with Wise Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She was an excellent seamstress, who also knitted and crocheted beautiful work. Her hand-made quilts are family treasures. Catherine was a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her extend family and regularly hosted family get-togethers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her siblings J.D. McAmis and Jimye Cooley; her half-brother, Ray McAmis; her cousins with whom she was raised, Thelma Perkins, Lucille Murph, Glenn Pierce, Betty Parker and Billie Fitch.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her daughter, Cathy Fothergill and husband Richard of Kilgore; her grandsons, Russ Fothergill and wife Cassie of Belton, Texas, Rob Fothergill and wife Stephanie of Decatur; her great grandchildren, Grace Catherine and Samuel Cole Fothergill of Belton, Texas, Riley Kay and Reid Ransom Fothergill of Decatur; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. Special thank you to Compass Hospice, Tyler and Longview, Texas and Gladys Starling, Henderson, Texas.
