Charles Melton "Mel" Newton

April 11, 1941 — December 10, 2023

Allen

Mel Newton, 82, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, December 10, 2023. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a faithful Christian man and was a Godly example to all who knew him. He led many to salvation in Christ and touched hearts with his singing. He led by example that you can’t outgive God.

Mel was the youngest of eight, born to Alfred and Myrtle Newton and raised in Chico, TX.  He has one remaining sister, Flora Jean Frazier, left to cherish his memory. Mel married his high school sweetheart, Judith Carolyn Kellum, on June 15, 1961.  They have three children that he was extremely proud of: Charles (Ardena) Newton of McKinney, TX, Danny (Fawnda) Newton of Colorado Springs, CO and Sharon (Greg) Johnson of Fort Worth, TX.  He loved his wife and kids, but the apple of his eye were the grandkids: Dan, Evan, Kaitlyn, Meredith, Rachel, Ryan and Jared. Mel was looking forward to becoming a first-time great grandpa in March 2024.

Mel and Judy moved to Allen, TX in 1966.  They raised their family and still reside there.  Mel wore many hats in the churches he attended throughout his life.  He led the singing, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, sang solo’s during the church service, served as an usher and a deacon/trustee.  He was blessed to lead his young wife to the Lord and to see all his children and grandchildren have a personal relationship with Christ.

Mel was proudly retired from Texas Instruments, a huge Dallas Cowboys fan and an avid fisherman. He loved his sweet cocker spaniel, Buddy. He was blessed to enjoy a mountain cabin “Heart’s Desire” in Ruidoso, NM.  When he was no longer able to make the trip from Allen to NM, he purchased a lake house on Lake Eufala in Checotah, OK where he loved fishing with his family, nephews and anyone who would fish with him.

Mel’s favorite hymn was Amazing Grace and his favorite Bible verse was John 3:16. His family knew that you couldn’t open Christmas presents until Mel opened his Bible and read the account of Jesus’ birth from Luke chapter 2 and will miss getting a special birthday phone call from him singing Happy Birthday.

Please join our family to celebrate a life well lived and a man well-loved on Saturday, December 16 at Grace Baptist Church in Decatur, TX.
