This is a note to family members of Clair Graves - relatives I've never met.
I'm the daughter of Mary Graves Terry who is aunt to Clair. My mother valued her friendship with Clair and they regularly kept in touch over the years. She has always spoken fondly of Clair and appreciated their conversations, soul-searching, and supportive relationship. I also recall my father Lynn speaking fondly of Clair. He's been gone for many years now.
I don't think I ever had the pleasure of meeting Clair face-to-face, unless it was when I was very young. I do have fond memories of visiting Doris and Freeman in Wetumpka (and shaking hands with George Wallace on the same trip) - sometime in the early 70s, then also visiting Freeman and Elsie after my husband and I moved to Alabama from Los Angeles in 2004. Clair and I did email occasionally over the last few years as she attemped to keep up with my mom who is now 91, and has recently moved into assisted living.
Anyway - I'm very sorry for your loss and I wish I would have had the opportunity to know Clair better. According to my mother, she was a absolutely wonderful human being - but of course, you know that. We'll be making a donation to the Arlington Humane Society in memory of Clair, and also in memory of my adored cat, Quinn, who my husband and I suddenly lost on October 7.
Our condolences,
Moya and Jeff Williams
