David Carlton

December 21, 1949 — March 25, 2022

Chico~ William David Carlton, 72, went to be with our Lord on Friday, March 25, 2022 in Chico.
David was born on December 21, 1949 in Decatur, Texas to Bill and Naomi (Goode) Carlton. He was baptized in The Methodist Church as a baby and never missed a Sunday. His mother, Naomi, was a Sunday school teacher and for many years superintendent of the children’s classes. David’s formative years were spent on a farm East of Bridgeport. There he learned to fish and hunt. He graduated from Bridgeport High School and he also attended Weatherford College. David recently commented that some of the best times of his life were when he and his friends were fishing or hunting. As a young man David began his career at Gifford-Hill Rock Crushing Plant.  He advanced from sweeping out rail cars to welder and shop foreman.  Before retirement he was superintendent of the entire plant for many years. After retiring, David returned to what he loved. He became a full-time rancher and farmer. His days were spent outdoors caring for his livestock and farming with many hours in his tractor. He loved nature and was a good steward of the land.
David had a great love for animals. Throughout his life he had special dogs. His final companion was Jen-Jen. She was a stray pup that was destined to be his. After careful training, Jen-Jen proved her worth over and over. Now 18 years old, she was faithful to David to the very end.
David was well known for his excellent barbecue and cooking skills. He frequently cooked for others when there was a reason to have a gathering. David was a good man who had compassion for his fellow man especially if anyone needed help. He was faithful to his true friends and had little patience for folks who annoyed or crossed him. There is sadness in the hearts of all who truly loved him.
May David rest in peace from his earthly labor. He will live in our hearts forever.
Funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport with burial to follow in East Bridgeport Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are to include Tommy Haworth, Willie Garrett, Chris Tackle, Bart Romines, Matt Kasner, Aaron Stanfield, Jimmy Williams, Johnny Williams, and Brandon Deaton. Honorary Pallbearers are Royce Raven, Wayne Jennings, Clay Poynor, Doyle Gene Smith, and Rusty Mann.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Carlton; and his numerous aunts and uncles.
