James was born on March 12, 1936 to LeRoy and Philmena (Deitering) Ostwinkle in Des Moines, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Ruth Stevens on July 23, 1955 in Des Moines, Iowa. James worked as a mailroom clerk for the Des Moines Register and was a member of the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Branson, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother; two sisters; and one great-grandchild.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Ruth Ostwinkle of Haslet; his four sons, Gregory and wife Julie Ostwinkle, Jeffrey and wife Shelli Ostwinkle, Brian and wife Jan Ostwinkle, and Timothy and wife Kim; his sister, Jolene Ostwinkle; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
