Funeral: 1 p.m. Monday at Hawkins Funeral Chapel. Burial: East Bridgeport Cemetery. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Rev. Dana Coker will officiate. Pallbearers: Leslie Oates, Gerald Oates, Larry Gober, Terry Gilley, Jerry Crawford, Jerry Paul Oates, and David Oates, and Brett Gentry.
James was born on March 1, 1927, the son of W.I. "Dick" and Grace (Bentley) Oates in Paradise. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. James married Sylvia Louise Findley on March 4, 1949 in Decatur. She preceded him in death on April 16, 1999.
Also preceding him were his parents; his brothers, W.I. Jr., Vernon, Glenn, Red, and Nelson Oates; and his sister, Helen Etter.
Left behind to cherish his memory is: daughter, Kim Starnes and husband Mark of Boyd; sons, Michael Oates of Paradise, Gaylen Oates of Paradise, and Pat Oates and wife Cristi of Bridgeport; grandchildren, Tammy, Kendra, Ashley, Devon, Ryan, Shane, Chasen, and Taylor; 6 great grandchildren; brother, Virgil "Rooster" Oates and wife Betty of Chico; sister, Sarah Smith (AKA "Big Sis") of Fort Worth; half sisters and brother, Sherry, Janice, and Tommy Bentley.
