AMARILLO -- Johnny Grill, 75, a retired Engineer with Southwestern Public Services U/E, died Saturday, January 13, 2007 in Amarillo. Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hawkins Funeral Chapel. Burial: East Bridgeport Cemetery. John was born on February 20, 1931 in Bridgeport, Texas. He graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1948 and served the United States in the Army Seventh Infantry Division during the Korean War. He attended North Texas State College, where he received his BS degree and earned his Masters degree at West Texas State College in 1958. He married his college sweetheart, Jerry L. Hill, on August 26, 1955 in Bridgeport, and had two children, Jay and Jane. Johnny began work at Southwestern Public Service Company in November of 1957 and retired from SPS U/E in June 1991, after serving 34 years as a PE Mechanical Engineer. John was an avid marathon runner and ran many marathons in many countries. He consistently won in his age group and was honored to carry the Olympic Torch in 1984. He was instrumental in establishing Lone Star Running Club and was club president and the writer of the club's monthly newsletter. He was a regular at the YMCA and served on the Downtown Board of Directors. After his retirement, John became an avid golfer. You could see him on the Comanche Trails early every morning, with Jerry by his side. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Johnny's name to the charity of your choice.

Pallbearers will be: Doug Bridwell, Mason Bridwell, Cody Carlton, Ken Sprecher, Royce Raven, and Christopher Grill. Honorary Pallbearer will be: Carlos Mann.

Survivors: wife: Jerry L. Grill of Amarillo; son: Jay Grill and wife Bee of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; daughter: Jane Ierides and husband Lou of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren: Jason, Chris, and Cassie Grill; sister: Betty Evelyn Carlton and husband Tom; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
