Austin ~ Joseph R. Nix, 100, passed away peacefully on December 23rd, 2019 in Austin. He was less than four weeks away from his 101st birthday.
Memorial Service is 2:00 p.m. Friday January 17th, 2020 at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
Joe was born on January 16, 1919. A long time Baptist, he believed the words of Jesus spoken in John 14: 2 when he said, “I am going there to prepare a place for you.”
He had a lifelong association with Wise County having graduated from Paradise High School where he met and eventually married Oleta Fae Motsenbocker on September 22, 1941 in Fort Worth.
As a second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, Joe flew gliders in World War II and took part in an important offensive against the Germans in “Operation Market Garden.” Because of his distinguished service during the war, he received seven citations and was awarded the Air medal.
After his discharge from the service, he attended Texas Christian University and graduated with a B.A. Degree in 1949. Joe served in the Air Force Reserve from 1945 to 1972 retiring when he achieved the rank of Major.
After graduation from TCU, he began his career with the Texas Workforce Commission retiring in 1985.
He especially enjoyed gardening and keeping up with current events. He will be missed dearly by all that knew and loved him.
His loving wife of 78 years, Oleta peacefully passed away on December 28th, 2019, less than one week after his passing.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his daughters, Sandy Nix of Austin, Susan Modlin and husband Bob of Timnath, Colorado, and Shirley D’angelo and husband Vito of Austin; his grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Karen, Mike, Lauren, Joanna, John; and his great grandchildren, Theo and Eleanor.
