Martin Hugo Martinez

August 17, 1949 — August 15, 2022

Martin Hugo Martinez, 72, passed away peacefully at home in Runaway Bay, Texas on August 15, 2022.  He was surrounded with love by his family and friends.

Martin was born on August 17, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas to Martin and Helen (Garza) Martinez. Martin attended St. Anne Catholic School in Houston, Texas.  In his teenage years he started serving tables at his family’s restaurants in Louisiana. Upon moving back to Houston, he became a respected and well-known server at his family’s restaurant named Leo’s.  He had a contagious smile and would give his shirt off his back to just about anyone.  He genuinely had a passion for serving and loved the restaurant industry, that’s when his family decided to close the restaurant, he went on to open his own chain.  In his later years he got into his second passion as a Maintenance Supervisor and absolutely loved it up until his recent retirement.  In his spare time, he enjoyed drawing, he was truly an amazing artist!  He also loved playing pranks, riding his motorcycle, watching football, and being a collector of many things, including but not limited to antiques, trains, and coins.  Something else he enjoyed was finding unique things; you better believe anyone around him would receive those findings, he would always say, “I thought of you when I found this,” which made those sometimes “crazy” pieces oh so special.  Martin was use to the Houston lifestyle for most of his life, but after retiring; he moved to Runaway Bay for a slower pace, “with beautiful surroundings,” as he would say.

Martin was a proud father to six children, Randy Braughton and wife Jennifer of Tomball, Texas, Angelica (Martinez) Coleman and husband Albert of Runaway Bay, Texas, Martin Hugo Martinez II and wife Vanessa of Runaway Bay, Texas, Troy Sands and wife Kristine of Richmond, Texas, Nicole Westry and husband Samuel of Richmond, Texas, and Daniel Martinez and wife Jennifer of Sugarland, Texas.  Between them he has 14 grandchildren, Randa and Calyn Braughton, Sydnie Perez and Truly Martinez, Kierstin (Edinger), Tabbitha, Legend, Lynnix, and Luxlee Martinez, Mia and Jacob Sands, Luke and Trip Westry, and Ethan Perez, along with his 15 great-grandchildren to continue his legacy.

Martin is proceeded in death by his parents; a sister, Linda Oyervidez; and a brother, Frank Lopez.

He is survived by his brother, Eddie Saucedo; his sisters, Monica Silis, Maree Grider and Debbie Hallman; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and host of friends.

A memorial service will be held in Houston, TX on September 24, 2022, at 2 PM at the St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church.
