Mavis (Hammon) Spain

August 25, 1926 — August 13, 2022

Decatur ~ Mavis Spain, 95, went to be with our Lord Saturday, August 13, 2022.

On Friday, August 19, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. the family welcomes all to a Celebration of Life Service at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery to follow. Family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Cliff Spain will officiate.

Mavis was born August 25, 1926 to Horace and Etta Avis (Dye) Hammon in Arcadia, Louisiana. She was united in marriage March 11, 1945 to Clyde Spain in Simsboro, Louisiana. Mavis and Clyde celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary of 75 years on March 11, 2020. Mavis was a beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend to many who will miss her dearly. Mavis cherished her family dearly.

Mavis had a servant’s heart and selflessly served as a minister’s wife supporting her husband as he shared God’s word across the nation. Some of Mavis’s fondest memories of the ministry were summers spent at Silver State Baptist Youth Camp in Sedalia, Colorado, where Mavis loved to work in the gift shop visiting and loving all who came to shop.

When Mavis and Clyde were not travelling, Mavis lived for her three boys and their families. Mavis cherished every moment, every meal, and every holiday with her family. If you had the chance to be welcomed into Mavis’s home, she greeted you with a cinnamon supper cake, German chocolate cake, lemon cake, or fried pies. If none of those were your favorite, Mavis would whip-up whatever you like. Food was her love language and she had good taste. Mavis passed on her love of cooking to all her family. Her recipes are now a treasure for those left behind.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Etta Hammon; her beloved husband of 75 years, Clyde Spain; a son, Ed Spain; her grandson, Justin Spain; 4 brothers, and 2 sisters.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her sons, Glen Spain and wife, Phyllis, of Allen, and Curtis Spain and wife, Sharolyn, of Sunnyvale; her daughter-in-law, Vicki Spain of Decatur; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
