McALLEN---Mertie Maye Flowers Tallant, 99, a retired teacher passed away on Sunday May 3, 2009 in McAllen.

Graveside Service: 5 PM Sunday, May 10, 2009 at Chico Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

Mertie was born outside of Chico, Texas in 1909 to Columbus Flowers and Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Flowers. She was married to Joseph Samuel Tallant in 1942. She entered the gates to Heaven in her home with her new dog Princess Tina and friends around her.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in McAllen, Edinburg and Chico and known in the Valley as a great teacher of Edinburg High School that taught math and typing for over thirty years. Before she moved to the valley she had graduated from Chico High School and went on to teach school at the age of 21 in Temple, Texas. Upon her arrival to the Valley she began to teach at Edinburg High School in 1949. Many of her students went on to become teachers, principals, and even accountants. She continued to advance her professional teaching skills. Eventually, she received a Lifetime Teaching Certificate in 1955. Her life was teaching up until her death. She taught many people about everything from education to knowing what life was about. She was a continual giver to charitable organizations and was a strong believer in her faith and with God. She is now with her maker and in a better place. She can now be with the ones she loved the most, her loving husband Joseph Samuel Tallant and her dog, Tina.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Samuel; siblings, Columbus Bea, Elizabeth Thomas, Lucile Herni, Orburn K.; and her loving dog, Tina Marie Tallant.

She is survived by some great nephews and great nieces and many, many friends who became her family.

Thank you Mertie for all you have done on this earth. You became a very good friend and part of our family. I am going to miss you dearly and all of your teachings. May you rest in peace. Keely Rachelle Smith
