Merton was born February 15, 1946 to Merton and Ruby (Fredrick) Johnson in Bridgeport, Texas. He married Renee Ann Walters on January 4, 1980 in Durant, Oklahoma. Merton was a veteran of the United States Army.

Merton is preceded in death by his mother and Buck McAdams, the only Dad he ever knew.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 33 years, Renee Johnson of Boyd; his son, Toby Johnson and wife Michele of Mansfield; his daughter, Ellen Maxey and husband Allison of Mansfield; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; his sister, Nora Fite and husband Buddy of Boyd; several nieces and nephews, other family members and a host of friends.
