For many years, Mike worked for Caltex Petroleum Corporation with which he had the opportunity to extensively travel internationally. It was during a trip to Australia he first met his future wife, Meryl. They were married in 1986 in Australia, before settling in Euless.
Mike grew up on a farm in Missouri and it was there that his Father and his Grandpa Pete introduced Mike to hunting. One day Mike saw a turkey shoot advertised and persuaded his father to let him go. Several turkeys later, Mike was addicted to trapshooting. From 1971 to 2016 he shot at hundreds of trapshooting tournaments throughout the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It was through this sport that Mike made many life long friends. He was on the Trapshooting All American team 11 times, was inducted into the Texas Trapshooting Hall of Fame in 1995 and then into the National Trapshooting Hall of Fame in 2021. During a two year assignment for his company to the Australia, he used trapshooting as an opening to travel around eastern Australia and New Zealand.
Mike shot trap during the warmer months, but kept the winters for hunting, mostly waterfowl. Mike loved the challenge of calling in the birds to his decoys, more than actually shooting them. That then led him to training his own hunting retriever dogs. Mike loved every one of his dogs and in later years, rarely left home without one of them riding shotgun.
Mike didn’t like to be without other hobbies to balance his shooting and hunting. He was a good golfer for many years, until shoulder issues forced him to retire his clubs. Then he got back into fishing. In 2005, Mike and Meryl moved to a 40 acres lot outside of Decatur. He made sure one of the ponds was well stocked and would quite often catch a fresh dinner.
After moving to the property, Mike decided to return to some of his farming roots, but definitely did not want to raise any animals. Instead, he started a small mowing and baling business. He loved that tractor. It was during this time that he decided to learn how to weld and worked hard at ensuring that there was some welding needed in almost any project or activity he was involved in. Then came learning how to whittle and finally, teaching himself to play the banjo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 35 years, Meryl Roslyn Fisher of Decatur; his sister, Paula Shelly Wilson of Magnolia; 12 nieces and nephews; numerous extended family and a host of friends.
