Sidney Nelson Sowell

December 17, 1936 — August 20, 2022

Sidney (Sid) Nelson Sowell was born in Carlton, Texas on December 17, 1936, and passed away from this world into the arms of his heavenly Father in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, August 20, 2022.

Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Bridgeport with burial to follow in Chico Cemetery. Family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Sid spent his early years in the central Texas farming community of Carlton and Fairy, Texas before graduating from Fairy High School in 1955, where he had been a popular student and active in a variety of sports. Following graduation, he went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad in Albuquerque, NM. A year later, he married his high school sweetheart, Frances Thornton, and they continued to live in Albuquerque for a few more months before they returned to Texas where Sid began his 34-year career with General Motors in Arlington. During his time at GM, Sid and Frances made their homes in Fort Worth and Hurst before retiring to their Lake Bridgeport home outside of Chico, Texas in 1991.

Sid was an avid outdoorsman and he passed along the joys of hunting, fishing, and water sports to his children and grandchildren. In retirement, Sid and Frances enjoyed traveling extensively in their RV. Including three trips to Alaska. In July of 2009, after 53 years of joyful marriage, and while on a RV trip to Colorado, Frances unexpectedly passed away.

In 2012, Sid married June Bowyer of Chico, which also provided the blessings of an additional wonderful family. After four years of joyful marriage, June passed away in 2016.

The memories of Sid’s kindness and generosity will always be treasured by those that knew him. Sid was known for his easy-going manner and helpfulness which he demonstrated throughout his life to strangers, friends, and family alike.

He was preceded in death by his father, L.D. Sowell, Jr.; his mother, Mamie Sowell; his wife, Frances Thornton Sowell; and his wife, June Bowyer Sowell.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his brother, Charles Sowell and wife Barbara; his son, Terry Sowell and wife Debbie; his son, Danny Sowell and wife Judy; his stepson, Bill Bowyer and wife Laina; his stepson, Doug Bowyer and wife Bunny; his 7 grandchildren, Erica Hood and husband, Jordan, Kara Stine and husband, David, Jake Sowell, Kacy Schneider and husband, JJ, Clayton Sowell and wife, Natalia, Deanna Sowell, and Trenton Sowell; his 5 great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
