Sue Carol (Underwood) Maxwell

July 26, 1936 — May 1, 2022

Decatur ~ Sue Carol Underwood Maxwell, 85, of Greenwood went to be with our Lord May 1, 2022.

Funeral is 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2022, at First Baptist Church in Decatur with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

Ken May, Gerre Joiner, and Phillip Weitner will officiate. Music will be lead by Gerre Joiner.

Sue was born July 26, 1936, to Edgar H. and Hazel Valley (Haralson) Underwood in Vernon, Texas. She married the love of her life, William Frank Maxwell on June, 28, 1957. She was a graduate of  Slidell High School, class of 1954, and Decatur Baptist College in 1956. Music was always a very special part of Sues’s life. She sang in a trio in college, at many weddings and funerals of friends and family, and lead the music or played piano in church. Grammy spent many happy hours with her grandchildren at the piano singing all kind of songs with them. As each great-grandchild was born Grammy would sing a special song just for them. Her beautiful soprano “angelic” voice will never be forgotten.

Sue was the Greenwood Postmaster for 37 years along with helping operate the family dairy. After retirement she and Frank owned and operated Greenwood Grocery for 7 years. Sue was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Decatur, where she sang in the choir.  She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to everyone she met. She spread love, kindness, and joy wherever she went.

Her family will treasure all the memories of Christmas celebrations, wonderful food, receiving toboggans, ornaments, singing songs together, and especially “ringing the bells” for Jesus. Her legacy of love and devotion will live on for generations to come.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Andy Maxwell; her mother and dad, Hazel and Ross Schleigh; her father, Edgar H. Underwood; a sister, Patsy Mann; her brother, Jervis Underwood; and in-laws, T.N and Jennie Mattie Maxwell.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her husband, Frank Maxwell of Greenwood; her daughter, Melissa Wilson and husband Randy of Greenwood; her son, Kevin Maxwell of Greenwood; her grandsons, J.J. Wilson and wife Ashley of Canton, Chance Wilson and wife Emily of Greenwood; her great-grandchildren, Quinn and Jace Wilson of Canton, and Eva, Max, and Rhett Wilson of Greenwood; her sisters, Mary Whisenant and companion Dave Barksdale of Greenwood, Laura Hensley and husband Michael of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; her brother-in-law, L.W. Mann of Alvord; her sister-in-laws, Carmen Underwood of Oak Point, and Mae Maxwell Schertz of Slidell; as well as numerous family members, and a host of friends.
