Decatur: Vernon Douglas Askey, 76, a machinist, went to be with our Lord, Tuesday, May 15, 2012.
Graveside service is 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 22nd at Oaklawn Cemetery with Drs. Van Gardner and Bill Hughes officiating. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 18th at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Askey was born on June 8, 1935 in Decatur to Thomas Vernon and Beatrice Lou (Jobe) Askey. He was united in marriage to Betty Jo Shurbet on July 28, 2007 in Decatur.
Mr. Askey graduated from Decatur Baptist College with a major in history. He served his country in the United States Army and was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Decatur.
Left behind to cherish his memory are wife, Betty Jo Askey of Decatur; son, James Askey of Benbrook; three stepsons, Lavoy Oates, Lynn Oates both of Eulogy, Texas, and Kenneth Oates of Oklahoma; stepdaughter, Karen Dee Singletary of Walnut Springs; sister, Carol Banks of Colorado; two brothers, Jerry Askey of Decatur and Gene Askey of Keller; 6 other stepchildren; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; other family members and a host of friends.
