Vivian Watt Alston

December 25, 1928 — June 13, 2022

On Monday, June 13th, 2022, V.W. “Al” Alston, loving father, Papa, uncle, and friend, passed away at the age of 93.

Funeral is 10:30 AM Friday at Northwest Church of Christ in Lake Worth with burial to follow at Boyd Cemetery. Family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Al was born December 25th, 1928 in Ft Worth, TX to Malcolm and Cora Alston. He was the 4th child with 3 older sisters and 2 younger brothers. He married Wanda Joyce McNeal on November 11, 1949 and they raised 3 children, Johnnie Ann, Jack, and Susan. Wanda preceded him in death after 60 years of marriage in 2009.

Al enlisted in the United States Army in August of 1946. In 1949 he was discharged from the Army into the Air Force. He served our country for 30 years, consisting of several deployments all around the globe including Korea and Vietnam in times of war. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1976 having achieved the rank of Master Sergeant.

After the Air Force, Al continued his role as a civil servant as a postal carrier for the United States Post Office for approximately 20 years. During most of that time, he worked a walking route carrying a bag of mail on his shoulder from door to door. Always kind, genuine, and personable, he developed a rapport and friendship with most of the people to whom he delivered mail.

In the final chapter of his life, Al found a dear friend, and companion in 2010 in Aline Quenon. They were constantly together, and the word most often used to describe them was “cute”. They laughed together, played together, traveled together, supported each other, cared for each other, and together, they brought so much joy into the lives of others.

Al loved God, loved his family, loved his country, and loved his fellow man. He treated others with respect and dignity, but was always willing to share his opinion when he felt like others could benefit from his wisdom. It was the way he treated others that made him almost universally loved and adored by those who were blessed to interact with him.

Al suffered abundantly more than his fair share of loss, heartache and disappointment in his time on this earth. Before he was called home, he lost every member of his family who came before him, all of his siblings, his wife, and all but one of his children. He has struggled, fought, lost, and endured betrayal and heartache. Despite all of that, he didn’t allow it to make him bitter. He always had a kind word, a smile, a ready laugh, and encouraging words for those he encountered.

Al is preceded in death by his wife Wanda Alston; his daughter Johnie Ann Wacaster who is survived by her husband Thomas Sr; his son Jack Alston who is survived by his wife Suzanne. He is survived by his daughter Susan Cole and her husband Terry. He is survived by his dear friend Aline Quenon. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Tommy Wacaster and his wife Lee Ann; Janice Schluter and her husband Will; Michael Hicks; John Hicks and Natasha Hicks; Mackenna Cole and her husband Greg; Joel Alston; Amy Patriquin; Vivian Alston; and Anna Leigh Alston. He leaves behind eight great-grandchildren: Jessica Weaver and her husband James; Kayla Wacaster; Ben Wacaster; Nick Schluter; Lauren Schluter; Jarith Hicks; Liam Cole; and May Cole; and one great-great-grandson, Harrison Weaver. In addition, he leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who loved and admired him.
