Boyd---William Edward Provence, 71, a retired self-employed building contractor, lost his valiant battle with cancer Saturday, March 26, 2005, at home. Graveside service: 2 p.m. Thursday in Cottondale Cemetery. Memorials: Compass Hospice of Decatur. William died as he lived, with dignity and quiet strength. He was a self-educated man who could do almost anything he set his mind to. He was a jack of all trades and master of many. He and Kathleen loved going dancing and trips to California. He was an honest man with great integrity and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. During his last days of his illness, he was cared for by "the three loves of his life," his wife, daughter and sister. He was very patient and gentle and he will be greatly missed. He was preceded by his parents; a son, Steve; and a brother, Richard. Survivors: Wife of 43 years, Kathleen Tyler Provence; daughter, Gena Smoley and husband, Philip; sons, Mikel Provence and wife, Susan, and Mark Provence; sister, Virginia Brown; grandchildren, Misty, Shawna, Michael, Brent and Amber; and great-grandchild, Shay Marie.
